Status for injured lineman Spencer Long still up in the air

LINCOLN — It appears Nebraska coach Bo Pelini will wait until Tuesday to address the injury status of his top offensive lineman, Spencer Long. Long, a fifth-year senior right guard from Elkhorn, injured his left knee on Nebraska’s fifth offensive play against Purdue on Saturday. He returned to the sidelines on crutches. Pelini said after the game the prognosis didn’t look good.

“I hope to God it isn’t as bad as it could be,” Pelini said Saturday.

Junior Mike Moudy, who had been rotating at left guard with junior Jake Cotton, moved to right guard for the rest of the Purdue game in Long’s absence. After the 44-7 win, offensive line coach John Garrison said he’d like to integrate either sophomore Givens Price or Crete sophomore Ryne Reeves into the guard rotation with Moudy and Cotton. Both made the road trip. Another option: burning the redshirt of junior college transfer Chongo Kondolo, who has worked with the top units this fall.

Long’s injury is the latest in a series of injuries to the Husker offense. Quarterback Taylor Martinez has missed the past three games with a turf toe injury on his left foot. Jake Long — Spencer’s twin brother — missed the last half of a win over Illinois and the win over Purdue with a hamstring injury. Wide receiver Jamal Turner missed most of those two games with the same injuries. Backup wide receiver Tyler Wullenwaber has missed two games with a shoulder injury, and Alonzo Moore missed time earlier this year.
